I chair the board of an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that approaches board building in an uncommon way. We put out an open call for applications to the members of our network (young professionals working in the nonprofit sector) once a year and select board members to fill open positions from the resulting pool of applicants. Around this time last year, the current board co-chair of the organization I serve called me and said that based on my exceptional commitment to the organization over the past year, he felt that I would be a great candidate to assume a co-chair position. I must confess that I’m not particularly fond of New Year’s resolutions. Perhaps it’s because I don’t like ultimatums and, in a way, New Year’s resolutions are ultimatums to yourself.
